Round 1

Who it was: Leonard Fournette (4th overall)

Who it should have been: Patrick Mahomes (10th)

If given the chance to go back, just about every team that selected before the Chiefs at 10 in 2017 would have taken Patrick Mahomes with their first pick. The Jacksonville Jaguars happen to be one of those nine teams who passed on the 2018 MVP, as they were still on the Bortles bus and decided to take Leonard Fournette with the fourth pick of the draft.

While Fournette did have a solid rookie season, his sophomore campaign was a disaster and his attitude and approach to the game have led to him being thought of as a disappointment to many in Duval County. In fact, he is another bad season away from being labeled a bona fide bust, so it will be now or never for Fournette in Jacksonville.

There is no telling if Mahomes would have had the same amount of success if the Jaguars did take him. Regardless, his obvious level of talent and potential are worlds ahead of anybody that Jacksonville has ever had at the quarterback position.

In his first season as a starter in the NFL, Mahomes became the third quarterback in NFL history to throw for 50 touchdowns in the regular season and is one of just seven players who has ever thrown for 5,000+ yards.

Even with the argument that he wouldn’t be able to put up those numbers with the Jaguars skill players, Mahomes would still have put the Jaguars in a much better position for success than Bortles ever could.
