What Marcus Simms can bring to the Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars got a nice young prospect in Marcus Simms after the 2019 supplemental draft. What does he bring to the table?
The 2019 NFL supplemental draft has come and gone, and while the theatrics of this event are certainly nothing compared to the actual draft, there were a couple of intriguing prospects available to teams.
One prospect who has a chance to stick in the NFL is former West Virginia wide receiver Marcus Simms.
Simms was WVU’s leading returning receiver before he entered the transfer portal, decided against a transfer, and made himself eligible for the supplemental draft.
Simms was not drafted by any team in the supplemental draft process, but he signed shortly after with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Because of the supplemental draft process, Simms gets a little bit different attention than most undrafted players. There was a demand for his services and he obviously liked the situation in Jacksonville the most, so what does this guy bring to the table?
Let’s take a look.
Speed

Simms’ top quality at this point is speed. He is a burner who can get past defensive backs with relative ease. He wasn’t just blowing by small school guys, either. He showed out at his pre-draft pro day by running 40-yard dash times as low as 4.40.
At 6-feet, 188 pounds, Simms’ speed is also not a result of just being tiny. He’s got good size, is strong, and uses his speed well in terms of creating separation and finding holes in the defense.
Ball Tracking
This guy has some of the best ball tracking ability I’ve seen. He follows the ball into his hands deep downfield at full speed and at awkward angles.
It’s one thing to be able to create separation deep downfield, but can you actually bring the ball in?
Simms does a really good job of this consistently.
Return Ability
In addition to running under deep balls at West Virginia, Simms was a pretty darn good return specialist averaging almost 10 yards per punt return this past season. He also had an 80-yard return in the 2017 season and some more big plays in the return game besides that.
Overall, Simms’ speed is his greatest quality. His ability to track the ball deep downfield could make or break his NFL roster chances.
