2017 NFL Draft Redo: Re-Drafting the entire first round
17. Washington Redskins: John Johnson, S, Boston College
Original Pick: Jonathan Allen
The Los Angeles Rams absolutely stole safety John Johnson in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Looking back, Johnson has proven to be one of the best draft day values in the entire class.
Johnson has excelled as the Rams’ starting strong safety since early in his rookie season. He is an extremely athletic player who is strong against the run and good in short zone coverage. He can also hold his own in man coverage against a variety of players.
The Washington Redskins took defensive lineman Jonathan Allen with the 17th pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. Allen is a good player who was certainly under consideration here. However, Johnson has been more impactful and fills an obvious position of need for Washington. This one is close, but I’m giving the slight edge to Johnson over Allen.
18. Tennessee Titans: T.J. Watt, EDGE, Wisconsin
Original Pick: Adoree’ Jackson
Adoree’ Jackson is an incredibly gifted cornerback who certainly has some nice upside going forward. That being said, he has been a bit of a disappointment through the first two years of his career. Simply put, there are better players on the board for the Tennessee Titans at number 18.
Instead of Jackson, the Titans bring in edge rusher T.J. Watt who has become a real menace for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Watt is a quick and athletic pass rusher who also plays with a nasty streak. He has obvious value as a pass rusher and also defends against the run at a high level. Watt would undoubtedly be a welcomed addition to the Titans’ front seven.
