3. S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson (Draft)

Pretty much everyone following the 2019 NFL Draft process was shocked to see Florida’s Chauncey Gardner-Johnson fall to the fourth round.

Most everyone had him pegged as a second-round prospect with his speed (4.48 in the 40-yard dash), explosiveness, and versatility.

Gardner-Johnson can play slot corner, box safety, free safety, and he plays with instincts and has great range.

Essentially, what I think happened here for the Saints is they basically got an additional second-round pick with this selection. Gardner-Johnson may need some time to find a perfect role in the NFL, but if the Saints had one major weakness this past season, it was their pass defense which allowed 30 touchdowns and only picked off 12 passes.

Gardner-Johnson’s versatility will allow the Saints to work him in quickly without overwhelming him as a full-time, every-down type of player.
