New York Giants goal is for Daniel Jones to play day one?
Are the New York Giants prepping Daniel Jones to take Eli Manning’s spot sooner rather than later? That sounds like what HC Pat Shurmur said.
In a not-so-subtle way, New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur made it sound like Eli Manning is not a lock to be the day one starter for his team.
As a matter of fact, he made it sound like he would like first-round pick Daniel Jones ready to play right away.
If the Giants’ goal is for Daniel Jones to play week one, it means their goal is also for Eli Manning to not play week one. Right?
That’s how we’re supposed to read that?
Meanwhile, you have other situations like the one in Denver where there has been no question whether or not Joe Flacco will start over Drew Lock.
It seemed like Eli Manning was in a similar situation to the one Alex Smith was in his final year with the Kansas City Chiefs, where it was understood he was the starter for one more year and Patrick Mahomes would take his place the next year.
That doesn’t seem to be the case in New York, and why would it be?
What has Eli Manning done for you lately?
I get that he brought the team a pair of championships, and he has gotten his due respect for that the past couple of years with the Giants playing him and paying him a ton of money despite just one winning season in the last six years and four double-digit loss seasons.
So what does Jones have to do to be considered ‘ready’ for day one? Maybe he just has to show well enough in training camp and preseason play, or maybe he has to show them something in the film room.
If you are the Giants, you should be looking for every reason to usher in the future. There’s nothing wrong with Jones taking Manning’s place sooner than people thought he would.
If he’s playing well enough, he should be the starter and the Giants shouldn’t look back.
