If the Kansas City Chiefs have any interest, veteran wide receiver Jordy Nelson appears ready to come out of retirement to catch passes from the league MVP.

The Kansas City Chiefs may have a unique opportunity to add another interesting pass catcher to their already explosive offense.

Veteran wide receiver Jordy Nelson was recently interviewed on KMAN, a radio station in Manhattan, Kansas. In the interview, the former Kansas State product talked about potentially playing for the Chiefs and seemed interested in coming out of retirement if the Chiefs were to call.

Nelson is 34-years-old and has had an impressive NFL career. He spent the first 10 years of his career catching passes from Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers. Nelson was Rodgers’ number one target for most of those years, showing impressive speed on the outside, reliable hands at all times and a ridiculous rapport with the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

Nelson’s best season came in 2014 when he caught 98 passes for 1519 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was selected to the Pro Bowl and named second-team All-Pro for his play that season.

Last year, Nelson hauled in 63 receptions for 739 yards and three touchdowns with the Oakland Raiders. He was solid in Oakland but has clearly lost a step. Nelson announced his retirement from the NFL in March, but there appears to be at least a bit of doubt in his mind.

Landing with the Kansas City Chiefs may just be a perfect of enough situation to get him out of retirement.

With Andy Reid calling plays and league MVP Patrick Mahomes slinging the ball all over the field, the Chiefs have the most explosive offense in the entire NFL. It is easy to see the appeal of Kansas City for Nelson. However, would the Chiefs have any interest in him?

Nelson’s track record speaks for itself. He has been one of the most reliable wide receivers in the game in recent years. He was not as impressive last season, but he still showed plenty of ability on the outside.

With Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson and rookie Mecole Hardman on the roster, the Chiefs are not exactly hurting for wide receiver depth. However, it would never hurt to bring in an established guy like Nelson to see what he can provide.

The Kansas City Chiefs are smack dab in the middle of a legitimate Super Bowl window. They need to make sure to make the most out of this opportunity by building as much talent and depth as possible. Nelson may not seem like a guy who can get some major playing time at the moment, but he would be a nice guy to have around in case of a loss or two at the position.

If nothing else, signing Nelson would be a low-risk, high-reward acquisition for the Kansas City Chiefs.
