Not having veteran safety Eric Berry on the field consistently was a major issue for the Kansas City Chiefs last season. Berry is undoubtedly a fantastic player who can impact the game in a variety of way. However, his inability to stay healthy and on the field in recent years has hurt the Chiefs.
Instead of betting on the health of Berry again, the Chiefs cut bait with him this off season and signed Tyrann Mathieu to add to the mix. Mathieu is one of the most talented safeties in the entire NFL and will undoubtedly help the Chiefs’ defense in 2019.
Mathieu is a dynamic playmaker who has a nose for the ball. He is a tremendous short zone defender who can read the quarterback well and consistently makes plays on the ball in the air. He is also a tough and physical player who can compete against the run and tackles extremely well in open space.
Mathieu also has big-time speed and range on the back-end, allowing him to have success as a deep safety as well. Simply put, Mathieu has an extremely well-rounded skill set that allows him to help the defense in a variety of ways.
The Kansas City Chiefs signing him this off season was undoubtedly a step in the right direction.
