Tracking AAF players who signed with NFL teams in 2019
Defensive Line
Joey Mbu was an interior defensive lineman I really liked coming out of Houston a few years ago, and he got NFL shots with the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins, Indianapolis Colts, and Green Bay Packers before landing in San Antonio.
The Dolphins are an intriguing fit for Mbu, who played well in his brief time in the AAF. He has fun potential as an interior player in Brian Flores’ defense there in Miami.
The Oakland Raiders continued to re-shape their roster by adding Barrett, a base defensive end at 6-foot-3, 260 pounds from the San Diego Fleet.
He racked up 15 tackles and two sacks in seven games, and the Raiders must have seen some things from Barrett on his tape that lead them to believe he has some rotational depth potential with them.
The former San Diego State star had a previous stint with the Detroit Lions.
This is one of the best signings of the bunch.
Schult was destroying people in the AAF with seven sacks in eight games, and was doing so with a combination of technique and effort.
This guy stood out in a significant way and was considered one of the top ‘prospects’ in the AAF.
He has an uphill battle ahead of him with the Vikings, no doubt, but the former Northern Iowa Panthers star has the chance to make his mark as a rusher.
The San Antonio Commanders had an embarrassment of riches with NFL talent at every level of defense, and Winston Craig gets a shot as a prototype 3-4 defensive end at 6-foot-4, 290 pounds with the Steelers.
The former Richmond Spiders star was active up front for the Commanders and helped them create a ton of turnovers this season in the AAF. He had two years with the Philadelphia Eagles developing before he ended up in the AAF.
The Steelers are reuniting with Sayles, who spent all offseason with the team in 2018 and competed through training camp.
He was an effective interior player for the Birmingham Iron in the AAF playing interior defensive line even if he didn’t rack up ridiculous numbers.
He had 16 tackles and one sack, and will compete to be rotational depth for Pittsburgh.
TJ Barnes is an absolutely massive defensive lineman at 6-foot-7, 346 pounds.
The former Georgia Tech product played in the AAF with the Atlanta Legends and now comes to the Carolina Panthers along with a host of other AAF players with the goal of becoming one of their top 53 to start the season.
Barnes has had stints in the NFL with the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Kansas City Chiefs.
