When it comes to snakebitten franchises, the Kansas City Chiefs have be ranked near the top. That’s especially true after the past few months.

It began last year when TMZ released a video that showed their star running back Kareem Hunt shoving and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel. The footage and the fact Hunt falsely denied anything happened forced them to release him. Then they came a Dee Ford penalty away in the AFC Championship from reaching the Super Bowl. Still, despite all that there was optimism.

This team had the reigning MVP at quarterback and the most dangerous passing attack in the NFL. Even as a purge is underway on defense with names like Ford and Justin Houston gone, with that offense they should be able to make do. Suffice to say that optimism just took another grievous blow as news surfaced via the Kansas City Star that wide receiver Tyreek Hill is under investigation by local police on battery charges.

It stems from an incident at home which apparently resulted in the breaking of his 3-year old son’s arm.

"The Kansas City Chiefs have confirmed to The Star that they are aware of a law enforcement investigation involving wide receiver Tyreek Hill. The Star has obtained a police report from the Overland Park Police Department about a battery incident that lists a juvenile as the victim. Hill’s fiancee, Crystal Espinal, is listed under “others involved.”A source familiar with the situation said Hill’s fiancee has been in contact with Overland Park police. The source said that the incident was against the couple’s 3-year-old son, resulting in a broken arm."

Chiefs risk-reward policy on player characters has burned them again

It’s important to note that nothing has been proven yet. However, this isn’t the first such incident of the type involving Hill. Years ago back in college, he was arrested for beating his then-girlfriend and now fiancee, Crystal Espinal. He was never convicted but the concerns around that history caused him to drop all the way to the 5th round in the draft. Yet the Chiefs took a chance on him anyway. For the same reasons they took a chance on Hunt, who also had a shady background.

Now in the space of a few months, they’ve been catastrophically burned by both players. The odds aren’t looking favorable for Hill to be ready for the season. Given what happened with Hunt, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the team actually decided to cut him. This is the sort of incident that could end up getting a player banned from the league.

One thing is for sure. After what’s happened, it’s safe to say the Chiefs are going to be far more cautious in the risks they take on players moving forward. Particularly when it comes to off-the-field issues.
