Orlando Apollos: Garrett Gilbert

College: SMU

AAF coach: Steve Spurrier

The Old Ball Coach aka Steve Spurrier gets the chance to work with Garrett Gilbert, a former Texas and SMU quarterback.

Gilbert was taken in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams and signed to their practice squad that year. He ended up spending some time with the New England Patriots (where he got himself a ring), Detroit Lions, and the Oakland Raiders before he got a shot with the Carolina Panthers to actually play in a regular season game.

Gilbert completed two passes but was waived by the Panthers just before the new year.

Now he is getting another chance to play ball at the age of 27 with the Apollos and there’s a very good chance he’ll get another shot at the NFL because of this league.
