Arizona Hotshots: John Wolford

College: Wake Forest

AAF coach: Rick Neuheisel

If John Wolford’s streak keeps up, he might need to go buy lottery tickets or something.

Wolford was given a tryout by the New York Jets after the 2018 NFL Draft that didn’t amount to a roster spot initially. When the Jets needed an emergency quarterback for their last preseason game in 2018, however, they remember Wolford and gave him a call to come sling the ball around a bit.

Wolford was at a Japanese steakhouse with friends when he got the call, and turned his attention from a career in investment banking to football.

Not giving up on his football dream after the brief stint with the Jets, Wolford was picked up as somewhat of an afterthought for the Arizona Hotshots, who spent the sixth overall pick in the AAF quarterback draft on former Oklahoma and Texas A&M quarterback Trevor Knight.

Wolford winning the starting job with Arizona is considered one of the biggest surprises so far for the AAF and it will be fascinating to see how this goes. He completed almost 64 percent of his passes as a senior at Wake Forest with 29 touchdowns and only six interceptions.

Working with notable former college coaches Rick Neuheisel and Hugh Freeze, Wolford is in a solid position to excel in this league.
