Steve Wilks as Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator

The Browns made quite a number of interesting hires that seem to have potential, but the one that could yield big dividends right away is adding Steve Wilks as their defensive coordinator. With all due respect to Gregg Williams, it feels like he never quite got the full potential out of what is a lot of talent on that Cleveland defense headlined by Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward. Wilks brings a strong track record with him from Carolina, San Diego, and Chicago.

He understands the essence of the modern NFL is stopping the run. His lone year with the Panthers saw them finish with the #3 run defense in the league. This is great news for the Browns who couldn’t do anything against the ground attack all season, finishing 28th. Fixing that area will offer more opportunities for Garrett to get after the quarterback and Ward to intercept the passes. Wilks is somebody the Browns can absolutely trust.
