John Mara of the New York Giants is in uncharted territory. During his entire time owning the franchise, he’s never gone through something like this.

His team is on course to be one of the worst in the NFL for the second-straight season and the distractions that are coming along with it only seem to be intensifying. The primary lightning rod for that is wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Many inside and outside the organization had hoped that signing a lucrative new contract would help the young star settle down. He could stop worrying about his financial future and just focus on football.

As it turns out, nothing is ever easy with Beckham. He always finds a way to get himself into trouble. A recent ESPN interview where he called out the team for their lack of passion and even went so far as to offer a lukewarm vote of support for Eli Manning was what started the issues. Then he compounded them with more sideline antics in the blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mara for one has grown tired of it and he said as much at the NFL’s Fall League Meeting.

"“I wish he would create the headlines by his play on the field as opposed to what he says and does off the field. I think he needs to do a little more playing and a little less talking.”"

New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur must take control

Mara admitted that he’s sick about all the losing his team has done this year. It’s been difficult to watch. He also said he’d leave up to the coaches to decide on what to do about Manning who continues to struggle in the new offense under Pat Shurmur. This is where things get interesting. Shurmur is the man in charge. He has to find a way to get control of his football team. Something that his predecessor failed to do.

Even the great Tom Coughlin had a hard time controlling Beckham during the end of his stint with the team. That should speak to the colossal challenge ahead for Shurmur. He already failed in Cleveland because he couldn’t handle things with enough discipline and precision. Early on in New York the same problems are cropping up. Beckham has made it known he’ll do what he wants regardless of who may or may not like it.

If Shurmur has to send him a message, be it fining or even benching him? That’s what he’ll have to do.
