Minnesota Vikings fear first round pick Mike Hughes tore ACL
The Minnesota Vikings could be without their top rookie for the season
Minnesota Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes suffered a potential season-ending injury in their 27-17 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported after the game that the team fears that Hughes suffered a torn ACL. Hughes was covering Larry Fitzgerald and his left knee buckled when he went to turn upfield.
It appears Fitzgerald may have stepped on Hughes’ right foot, causing Hughes to stumble and injure his left knee.
A torn ACL would put Hughes out for the remainder of this season and potentially the start of next year. If the ACL injury is confirmed, Hughes would be the second first round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft to suffer the injury, following New England Patriots offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn.
Minnesota has invested heavily at the cornerback position in recent NFL Drafts, taking one in one the first two rounds each year since 2015. Trae Waynes and Xhavier Rhodes, both first round picks, have started this year for Minnesota and former second round pick Mackensie Alexander has gotten time in the slot.
Hughes had one interception in his first six games, and returned that pick for a touchdown against San Francisco in the season opener. Minnesota also used him in the return game, using him in limited time as a punt and kick returner.
Minnesota will carry on their season next week in New York against the Jets, who are coming off an impressive 42-34 win over the Colts on Sunday.
