New Orleans Saints: Tre’Quan Smith has breakout game on MNF
New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith had a breakout game on Monday Night Football, Drew Brees’ big night in primetime.
Monday Night Football was a night to remember for the New Orleans Saints, their faithful fan base, Drew Brees, and rookie wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith.
Smith was a favorite in the NFL Draft community after a great career at UCF where he racked up 1,171 yards in his last season on campus with 13 touchdowns. He then showed off his top athletic ability at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine with a 4.49-second 40-yard dash and 37.5-inch vertical jump.
This year’s wide receiver class was not highly regarded, at least in comparison to some other recent classes, and Smith lasted all the way until the end of the third round, where the Saints alertly scooped him up.
As a matter of fact, the Saints really lucked out with Smith lasting until round three after they traded all the way up into the top half of the first round to select Marcus Davenport, and didn’t have a second-round selection or any picks between the time they picked Davenport (14th overall) and the time they picked Smith (91st overall).
As good as the Saints’ 2017 NFL Draft class was (rookie of the year on both sides of the ball), it was certainly going to be tough to top.
Not that Davenport and Smith have ‘topped’ what Alvin Kamara, Marshon Lattimore, Marcus Williams, and Ryan Ramczyk, but both of the Saints’ 2018 rookies shined on Monday night.
In particular, Tre’Quan Smith had himself a day, including catching one of the most memorable passes he will ever catch.
Smith’s job on that play was simply not to screw things up, and he did that and then some.
His second touchdown on the night proved he can get serious separation:
The Saints looked absolutely unstoppable against one of the best defenses in the NFL on Monday night. Their top two picks in the 2018 NFL Draft shined in this game but Smith really had himself a coming out party with three catches for 111 yards and two scores.
The Saints really can run their offense through just about any of the playmakers they have with Brees at the quarterback position. They didn’t even really need Kamara in this game as Mark Ingram was back from suspension and running like his life depended on it.
If Smith continues to progress, this Saints offense is going to be downright unfair with the way Brees has been picking apart defenses and playing mistake-free football.
