After losing one of their top playmakers the Philadelphia Eagles could be getting an upgrade

Upon learning that running back Jay Ajayi was lost for the season with a torn ACL, the Philadelphia Eagles appear ready to make a deal.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday evening that the Eagles restructured the contract of Pro-Bowl defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. The deal, which was completed before Ajayi’s injury, created $6.5 million in cap space this season and $11.7 million more next year for Philadelphia.

After the news of Ajayi’s injury came down on Monday afternoon, Derrick Gunn of NBCS Philadelphia reported that while the Eagles have been connected to Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell, don’t be surprised if they inquire on Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson.

Adding either Johnson or Bell would take a serious hit to the Eagles payroll this year and beyond. Bell has held out all season despite being given the franchise tag, but he plans to report to the Steelers midway through this season to accrue a year on his deal and be eligible for free agency.

Johnson signed a three-year deal worth $38.1 million before the season, but the Cardinals are 1-4 and are clearly rebuilding.

Eagles executive Howie Roseman loves to make a deal, highlighted by last year’s trade with Miami for Ajayi after Darren Sproles tore his ACL.

Adding a running back the caliber of Bell or Johnson would give the Eagles offense a much-needed boost. Philadelphia is 17th in total yards this year and they’ve scored no more than 23 points in their first five games.
