Cleveland Browns: Tyrod Taylor injures hand, Baker Mayfield in
The Cleveland Browns could have a new starting quarterback next week
Update: Cleveland Browns qaurterback Tyrod Taylor returned with 14 minutes left in the second quarter despite landing awkwardly on his left hand.
Original: Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor left Thursday’s preseason game against Philadelphia with a left hand injury.
Taylor scrambled towards the left sideline and lofted a throw into the endzone before landing on his left hand. He landed palm first with his arm extended and immediately grabbed his arm.
Teammates helped Taylor up and he jogged across the field as the training staff scrambled to assist him. Cleveland listed Taylor as questionable to return, and he was seen on the sideline holding his helmet.
First-overall pick Baker Mayfield entered the game and started the second quarter with a 2-0 lead following a safety. with Nick Foles in the endzone.
Cleveland also lost fourth-overall pick Denzel Ward to a back injury in the first quarter, and he is listed as questionable to return.
Cleveland has not given Mayfield first-team reps and has stressed that Taylor is their starting quarterback. Mayfield could start getting those reps if Taylor isn’t ready for practice, or potentially week one against Pittsburgh at home.
Having Mayfield potentially start week one at home would be very exciting not just for the Cleveland fan base, but the entire NFL. The Heisman Trophy winner has looked decent in the preseason, but head coach Hue Jackson insists the plan is for Mayfield to be the backup quarterback this year.
Considering Taylor took Buffalo to the playoffs last year it’s not a travesty if Mayfield doesn’t start week one. That can obviously change if this injury to Taylor is major, but for now, it’s a wait and see game.
