WIDE RECEIVER

The battle for the sixth wide receiver spot is a ferocious one. It is a certainty that, barring injury, Paul Richardson, Jamison Crowder, and Josh Doctson are Washington’s three main wide receivers.

I will very surprised and would think the ‘Skins made a mistake if they cut either Brian Quick or Mo Harris. They both just have too much upside and know the offense too well to be discarded.

So, which rookie do the Redskins keep?

I had the Redskins picking Trey Quinn with their second seventh-round pick in my April 16th mock draft (nailed it!). But, even then I saw him as a practice squad player. Since Robert Davis went down, (I think we all had high hopes for him this year), Quinn and Cam Sims have been neck and neck.

Prior to the second preseason game against the Jets, Jay Gruden had been showing all kinds of love for Quinn. But, post-Jets game, that love has kind of shifted toward Sims. Heck, Gruden even excused Sims’ drop turned interception saying that there are always going to be drops from time to time.

That is a very un-Gruden-esque thing to say. But, you have to find a way to forgive that mistake when the Alabama product followed it by making two or three catches that, frankly, few NFL receivers make. This included a spectacular catch in crunch time that set up the game winning field goal.

Let’s face it — when in doubt, Alabama over SMU, 6’5″ 215 pounds over 6’0″ 200 pounds, and most importantly, sensational over potentially very good.

Yes, Quinn runs very precise, crisp routes. But Sims is a quarterback’s best friend, he doesn’t have to be open to catch the pass.

On a couple of his highlight reel catches the other night the defensive coverage was excellent and he made the catch anyway.

That’s what you can do when you’re 6’5″, have arms as long as legs, hands the size of cafeteria trays, played for Alabama, and have the hunger of a rookie undrafted free agent trying to make an NFL team.

The second bubble bust shocker – Trey Quinn to the practice squad.
