#2 Rookie quarterbacks

First round quarterbacks will always garner heavy attention during the preseason, and the likes of Cleveland’s Baker Mayfield and Buffalo’s Josh Allen are no exception to the rule.

Mayfield opened a few eyes and turned a couple heads in his first professional performance against the Giants. The first overall pick connected on 11 of 20 targets for 212 yards and two touchdowns, including a 54-yard touchdown strike to fellow rookie Antonio Callaway to put the Browns up two scores early in the fourth.

It was not necessarily spotless for Mayfield but he impressed in many aspects and gave the Browns a glimpse of how he can develop into a true NFL-caliber quarterback.

For Allen, the 2018 seventh-overall pick entered the Bills preseason opener in the second half and threw for 119 yards and a touchdown with an 84.5 quarterback rating. He also had his moments but also showed why the Bills will need patience with his development.

Room for improvement is a definite for Allen but potential is key and he possesses that element.

Both quarterbacks will look to build off favorable outings in their team’s preseason openers and both will also look to close the gap on the starting jobs for their respective ball clubs.
