A major blow has already hit the New York Giants secondary

Less than a month after drafting Sam Beal in the third round of the Supplemental Draft, the Giants have lost their rookie defensive back would miss the entire season with a shoulder injury.

ESPN’s Dianna Russini first reported the injury Wednesday afternoon on Twitter.

Beal was the highest supplemental draft pick since Josh Gordon went to Cleveland in the second round in 2012. The Western Michigan cornerback was ruled academically ineligible to play college football following the 2018 NFL Draft, and opted to enter the supplemental draft.

New York enters this season with several questions at cornerback despite a hotbed of names returning. Janoris Jenkins leads the room with former first round pick Eli Apple returning and hoping to rebound this season. William Gay was signed to a one-year deal and Riley Curtis projects to be the starting nickel corner.

Grant Haley has impressed early after being brought in as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State.

Having missed all of OTAs and mini-camp this offseason Beal was already behind the ball and certainly wasn’t a lock to start at any point this season. A big corner who started 24 of his 36 career games at Western Michigan, Beal finished his collegiate career with 96 tackles, two interceptions and 21 passes defended.

New York could dip back into the free agent market to replace Beal in the back end of their secondary depth chart. Bashaud Breeland is the top name available, while the remaining group is questionable at best.
