The NFL could hand down a major suspension to Jameis Winston

The NFL is reportedly planning to suspend Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston for three games under the personal conduct policy, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

A three-game suspension would cost Tampa Bay their starting quarterback against the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Winston has been under investigation by the NFL for an incident that occurred over two years ago when an Uber driver alleged Winston groped her. Winston has denied the allegation from the March 2016 event in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Schefter reports the league has not officially notified Winston or the Buccaneers of his suspension, and that the number of games could vary from the three he is hearing from league sources.

BuzzFeed first reported the alleged incident in November of 2017, which led to an investigation led by Lisa Friel.

Winston has been the subject of multiple off the field allegations dating back to his days at Florida State. Incidents including an alleged rape, stealing crab legs from a grocery store, and shouting an obscene phrase on campus have haunted him, but didn’t prevent Tampa Bay from drafting him with the number one pick in 2015 over Marcus Mariota.

Winston became the youngest winner of the Heisman Trophy in 2013 and led Florida State to a BCS National Championship the same season. He received his first and only Pro Bowl selection as a rookie in 2015 after leading the Buccaneers to a 6-10 season.

Journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick becomes the favorite to lead Tampa Bay while Winston is suspended. Entering his 14th season for his seventh team Fitzpatrick started three games last year after Winston suffered a sprained shoulder.
