NFL Free Agency: Dez Bryant makes sense for the 49ers
Dez Bryant wants to stay in the NFC in free agency
Dez Bryant has been looking for work since the Dallas Cowboys cut him prior to hosting the NFL Draft, and the free agent has his preference where to play.
After reportedly turning down a three-year deal worth $21 million from Baltimore, Bryant has seemed to receive little interest. The three-time Pro Bowler turns 30 this season, and his production hasn’t been the same since Dallas drafted him in 2010.
One of Bryant’s biggest desires was to play against the Cowboys twice a year, meaning he stays in the NFC East. That doesn’t appear to be happening, but Bryant could face his former team in the preseason.
When someone questioned the star receiver on where he wants to play in an Instagram comment, Bryant responded with one town.
San Francisco.
San Francisco could certainly use a big target like Bryant, and they have the cap space to sign him.
After drafting speedy Washington receiver Dante Pettis in the second round the 49ers have Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin as their starting wide receivers. Trent Taylor, Aaron Burbridge, Aldrick Robinson, and seventh round pick Richie James are also options for San Francisco.
Despite giving quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo $37 million this year the 49ers still have a considerable amount of salary cap. Safety Eric Reid may still be in their plans despite his lawsuit against the NFL for still being unsigned for what he says is backlash for his National Anthem protests.
Where the cap stands depends where you look for your salary cap rankings. Spotrac has the 49ers with $37 million while OverTheCap has them with $45 million on hand.
Regardless, the 49ers have the space to sign Dez Bryant as a primary target for Garoppolo. Imagine having the personalities and soundbites from Bryant and cornerback Richard Sherman in the same locker room. It’d definitely make for some interesting practices for head coach Kyle Shanahan.
