Oakland Raiders trade for Jets quarterback Christian Hackenberg
Raiders head coach Jon Gruden gets his development quarterback
New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles announced Tuesday that the team has traded quarterback Christian Hackenberg to the Oakland Raiders. Compensation for Hackenberg will be a conditional seventh round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network says seventh-round draft pick tied into the deal relies on him being on the Raiders roster a certain number of games.
Hackenberg was drafted out of Penn State in the 2016 NFL Draft with the 51st overall pick, though never reached the field in the regular season.
New York’s once-crowded quarterback room now consists of veterans Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown and third-overall pick Sam Darnold. Bryce Petty was waived after the NFL Draft and signed by the Miami Dolphins to compete for the backup job to Ryan Tannehill.
Hackenberg was one of the more polarizing players in the 2016 NFL Draft with a successful career at Penn State. Keeping the program afloat following the Jerry Sandusky scandal, Hackenberg became the university’s single-game and career passing yards leader, while also becoming the first Nittany Lion to throw for over 8,000 yards in his career.
Hackenberg also held the career passing touchdowns record, which was broken by Trace McSorley last season.

Oakland enters camp with starting quarterback Derek Carr a full year removed from leg surgery and Jon Gruden back as the head coach. Former Buffalo Bills first-round pick E.J. Manuel and former Michigan State star Connor Cook occupy the quarterback room, although Gruden has no connection to either outside of re-signing Manuel this offseason.
The backup job in Oakland will come down to Manuel, Cook, and Hackenberg likely battling for two spots behind Carr.
Cook appears to be on the outside looking in with Gruden bringing in Manuel and Hackenberg this offseason. Rapoport also mentioned the Raiders do not plan on releasing Manuel or Cook in the near future.

Cook has seen playing time with the Raiders when Carr broke his leg late in the 2016 season. He appeared in two games, one in the regular season and one in the playoffs where he lost to Hackenberg’s former college coach Bill O’Brien and the Houston Texans.
