Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones and company were thrown a curveball while hosting the 2018 NFL Draft when future Hall of Famer Jason Witten’s retirement came into focus. After Philadelphia appeared to jump the Cowboys for South Dakota State tight end Dallas Goedert in the second round the Cowboys settled for Dalton Shultz in the fourth round.

More from NFL Free Agency

Schultz saw limited action in three years at Stanford, a program known for producing quality NFL tight ends. Making 55 catches for 555 yards and five touchdowns Schultz wasn’t the prolific weapon Stanford alums such as Zach Ertz was.

Aside from Schultz, the Cowboys have Rico Gathers, Geoff Swaim, and Blake Jarwin at tight end, Swaim being the only one with an NFL reception. Swaim’s nine NFL catches combined with the uncertainty of Gathers should be a cause for concern inside Jones’ office.

In Dallas Fleener would bring experience and stability at not just the tight end position, but among the receivers. Witten’s retirement combined with the release of Dez Bryant accounts for 132 receptions last year. That’s a lot of production missing for quarterback Dak Prescott coming off a down season.

Spotrac has the Cowboys with approximately $8.3 million in salary cap entering this season. The addition of Fleener would do wonders for the Cowboys offense if he can return to form.
