After some cryptic tweets and national reports, it seems like a trade or release of Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman is imminent…

The Seattle Seahawks have one of the NFL’s worst salary cap situations at just under $12 million in cap space. Releasing or trading cornerback Richard Sherman would nearly double their available room.

Could they stomach such a move?

Apparently, Sherman will meet with Seahawks management at some point on Wednesday to discuss his future with the team…

Sherman has apparently been texting some other national reporters, telling them that there’s ‘nothing to report’ but that doesn’t seem to be likely.

Ian Rapoport on NFL Network in a live update says that Sherman has been texting teammates telling them ‘in no uncertain terms, goodbye’.

Sherman is coming off of multiple Achilles injuries and will count $13 million against the salary cap this year. With one year left on his contract, turning  30 in a few weeks, what is his value?

It’s probably going to be a case of ‘get what you can, while you can’ for a guy that won’t be able to participate in offseason activities.

If the Seahawks release Sherman, Rapoport speculates it could be ‘some time’ before Sherman finds a new team.

When healthy, Sherman is one of the best zone corners in the game. He is instinctive, he has great ball skills, and the personality he brings to the field has given the Seahawks’ defense an incredible edge over the past few years.

Sherman’s presence in Seattle helped bring this team a championship back in the 2013 season, but as the Seahawks have tried as best they can to ‘keep the band together’, Sherman’s impact has slightly diminished and injuries have begun piling up.

I’m guessing teams inquired about the availability at the Scouting Combine last week, so the Seahawks meeting up with Sherman today would seem to indicate that he’s more likely to be released than traded.

He will have an interesting market in free agency if he’s released.

The Seahawks are certainly going to look a lot different in 2018, re-loading and almost rebuilding their defense.
