A suspected drunk driver struck and killed Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson
Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson was killed on Sunday morning when a suspected drunk driver struck and killed him and another person.
According to the Indiana State Police and the Indianapolis Star Tribune, the accident occurred Sunday morning around 4 a.m. on I-70. The 26-year-old Jackson had become ill while driving and another driver stopped to help him.
While both Jackson and the good samaritan were on the side of the highway a suspected drunk driver struck the two men. A police officer approaching the scene also struck one of the victims after they were thrown into the middle of the dark highway by the drunk driver.
Police apprehended the suspected drunk driver, who reportedly was without a licence, on foot and transported him to Marion County Jail.
Jackson appeared in all 16 games for the Colts in 2016 and started eight games at linebacker. An undrafted free agent out of Georgia Southern, Jackson was signed by the Arizona Cardinals in May of 2015, but was cut after training camp. Indianapolis added him to their practice squad and signed him to a future contract for next season.
Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted “our hearts and prayers are with Edwin Jackson’s family. Terrific young man, respected and liked by all.” Jackson’s former teammate and linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. said “Lost For Words. Great Person, Teammate, Brother. Will Be Missed Man! God Has A Better Plan My Dude!
The NFL will certainly honor Jackson prior to Super Bowl LII between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots in Minneapolis.
