DeShon Elliott, S, Texas: 2018 NFL Draft Scouting Report
By Andrew Kim
Player Comparison: Harrison Smith
DeShon Elliott is very similar to Harrison Smith size wise as they are both very good at run support and are aggressive tacklers. Similar to Elliott’s breakout year, Smith had seven interceptions in 2010 compared to Elliott’s six interception performance in 2017. If Elliott can run better than a 4.55 at the 40 at the NFL Scouting Combine, his stock will rise past round 2 to mid to late round 1 talk. Since Smith was picked at 29 by the Minnesota Vikings in Round 1 during the 2012 NFL Draft, it is probable to say that Elliott has a good chance to go somewhere in that range as well.
Best Team Fit: Pittsburgh Steelers
With Mike Mitchell getting older, the Pittsburgh Steelers have to upgrade the safety position next to Sean Davis. A big hitter that can cause turnovers that is versatile would benefit the Steelers secondary as it disappointed against the Jacksonville Jaguars during the AFC Divisional playoff game. DeShon Elliott also gives great run support, range, and tackling ability the Steelers lack in the back of their secondary. Ideally, the best position that fits DeShon Elliott is at free safety; making plays near the line of scrimmage and being active around the ball as much as possible.
