Chiefs trade QB Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins
A megadeal is sweeping across the NFL entering into Super Bowl weekend
Veteran quarterback Alex Smith has been traded by the Kansas City Chiefs to the Washington Redskins for a third-round draft pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller.
Washington’s trade means quarterback Kirk Cousins will hit the free agent market after the franchise applied the franchise tag on him twice. Kansas City will now move on with Mahomes as their starter.
At 33-years-old Smith entered the final year of his deal worth $17 million, but will sign a four-year extension with the Redskins. Despite acquiring Smith the Redskins are very much in play for drafting a quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft. A development quarterback such as Mason Rudolph, Luke Falk, or Mike White could be in the cards in the mid-rounds to learn under Smith.

Smith was considered a trade candidate for the Cleveland Browns after former Chiefs general manager John Dorsey was hired by the Browns for the same role. Now the Browns have the opportunity to explore the free agent and draft market to find their franchise quarterback.
Cleveland owns the first and fourth overall picks in the 2018 NFL Draft after finishing with the worst record in the league and acquiring the Houston Texans first round pick. Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Baker Mayfield will all be in play for the Browns, who drafted DeShone Kizer last year in the second round.
