Will a new coaching staff in Tennessee doom Marcus Mariota?

Many needs come to mind for the Tennessee Titans in the upcoming offseason and 2018 NFL Draft, but a quarterback was not one of them. Tennessee passed up the opportunity to trade back in 2015 when teams like Philadelphia had a strong eye on Mariota.

So despite Mariota’s staggering development, it comes as a surprise that the Titans reportedly had a sit-down interview with Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen.

One of the biggest mysteries in a crowded quarterback class, Allen has received projects as high as the top pick to a development arm in the middle of the draft. The fact Mariota is still under development and Allen should sit for a year makes the connection with Tennessee even more puzzling.

Some teams will interview prospects, especially quarterbacks, just to have a background report on them if an opportunity arises via trade or free agency down the line.

It’s unlikely Allen ends up in the AFC South where the Titans would see him twice a year, and additional research could help them gameplan down the line. Indianapolis is unlikely to take a quarterback with the third pick despite Andrew Luck’s injury.

More from NFL Draft

Jacksonville got to the AFC Championship with Blake Bortles, but they sit late in the first round and have more issues to address.

Houston has their guy in Deshaun Watson, who like Luck is coming off a major injury.

Would new head coach Mike Vrabel, a former NFL linebacker and defensive coordinator, kick off his reign by moving on from a very popular quarterback and taking a chance on Allen? I doubt it, but at the same time it wouldn’t be mindblowing, at least to me, if the Titans and Mariota struggle to agree to a contract extension

Mariota enters the final guaranteed year of his contract, and the organization would likely exercise his fifth-year option worth approximately $24 million.

For now I’ll chalk the Titans and Allen talking to just cordial research, but keep this connection in mind for down the road.
