A new era begins in New York with the hiring of Pat Shurmur

In wake of the Minnesota Vikings comeback victory against the New Orleans Saints, the New York Giants are expected to hire Minnesota offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur for their vacant head coach position. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was the first to report the Giants intentions to hire Shurmur.

Shurmur has found tremendous success in Minnesota despite a carousel of quarterback injuries to three different starters. Sam Bradford and Case Keenum have succeeded in place of Teddy Bridgewater, who has attempted just two passes since injuring his leg prior to the 2016 season.

New York will have to wait until the Vikings are either eliminated from the playoffs or win the Super Bowl. Minnesota will play in Philadelphia next weekend for the NFC Championship, so the earliest the Giants can make the hiring official is next Monday.

Shurmur brings head coaching experience to the Giants after two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, with whom he went 9-23. Cleveland started Brandon Weeden, Colt McCoy, and Seneca Wallace during Shurmur’s tenure, leaving him little opportunity to succeed.

Shurmur went on to be the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia under Chip Kelly and has worked under Mike Zimmer, Andy Reid, and Steve Spagnuolo.

It’s unclear if Spagnuolo will work on the Giants staff after serving as their defensive coordinator and interim head coach after the firing of Ben McAdoo.

Shurmur will be tasked with alleviating the tensions in New York spelling from Eli Manning’s benching and the antics of several young players. The future of Manning in New York is also in question given his age and decline in production. New York drafted Davis Webb out of Cal as a development arm last year, but with the second overall pick stand to draft Manning’s heir.

Conceivably Shurmur could bring one of the three quarterback’s he’s worked with in Minnesota to New York to be the stopgap and mentor for a young quartergback. That title would likely be for Sam Bradford or Case Keenum, both of whom are free agents. Teddy Bridgewater could also be an option as the Giants next starter when he hits free agency this offseason.

Adding Bridgewater would save the Giants the task of choosing a quarterback with their second-overall pick. Penn State running back Saquon Barkley would be a strong candidate for the Giants if they stand pat in the first round.
