The worst kept secret in football will become official for the Raiders

Jon Gruden will be officially named the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in a “splashy” press conference Tuesday according to Steve Corkran and confirmed by Adam Schefter.

Oakland’s press conference will come after Gruden makes his final appearance for ESPN on Saturday when the Kansas City Chiefs host the Tennessee Titans.

Gruden’s hiring has become the worst-kept secret in football after the Raiders fired head coach Jack Del Rio immediately after Sunday’s game. Del Rio announced his own firing in his post-game press conference.

Several assistant coaches have already been hired by the Raiders in anticipation of Gruden’s hiring. Carolina Panthers coordinator Greg Olson is expected to be Gruden’s offensive coordinator and Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther is a top candidate for Oakland’s defensive coordinator position.

Despite not coaching in nearly a decade Gruden has routinely been a magnet for head coaching rumors. Speculation grew when the Tennessee Volunteers began their search for a head coach, and Gruden’s former team in Tampa Bay had reportedly looked into hiring the Super Bowl-winning coach before retaining Dirk Koetter.

Oakland had previously traded Gruden to Tampa Bay for four draft picks after Gruden spent four seasons with the team.

Gruden has a fantastic opportunity with the Raiders moving to Las Vegas and quarterback Derek Carr a full season removed from a broken leg. The 54-year-old coach appeared to be pleased with Carr during his appearance on Gruden’s QB Camp prior to the 2014 NFL Draft when Carr was coming out of Fresno State.

Gruden is 95-81 in his head coaching career with Oakland and Tampa Bay with one Super Bowl win while with the Buccaneers.
