Stability looks to have been found for the New York Jets front office

With rumors and uncertainty surrounding the New York Jets, the organization announced contract extensions for general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles. Both deals will run through the 2020 season, giving both men an opportunity to build the team with their collective vision.

Bowles was rumored to be a candidate for a potential head coach job with the Arizona Cardinals if Bruce Arians departs this offseason. New York had hired Bowles away from the Cardinals when he was their defensive coordinator. Now three seasons into his tenure with the Jets, Bowles is 20-27 despite never having solid footing at the quarterback position. Half of his wins came during his first season.

Hired on Jan. 13, 2015, Maccagnan has found success in the draft, particularly on defense. Leonard Williams, Marcus Maye, and Jamal Adams each look like core pieces of the Jets defense going forward.

Maccagnan and Bowles next and greatest task is to find a franchise quarterback. Maccagnan drafted Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg in the last three years, but Hackenberg has seen no regular season action since being a second-round pick.

New York projects to have a top-10 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft where they’ll have a multitude of options at the quarterback position. California stars Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold are expected to be off the board, but Heisman winners Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson could be a big splash.

If Maccagnan doesn’t fall in love with any of the quarterbacks in the first round he could turn towards Hackenberg’s former teammate at Penn State Saquon Barkley to carry the load on offense.
