Will the Cleveland Browns “do the deal” to get a veteran quarterback?

Cleveland’s quarterback history is a well-known dumpster fire going back more than two decades through a myriad of coaches, front office personnel, and ownership. They’ve failed to find talent in the draft and haven’t dipped their toe deep enough into the free agent quarterback market.

New general manager John Dorsey could finally bring a sense of stability to the Browns front office with his experience in Kansas City. A major piece of any stable franchise is a quarterback, and Dorsey could find the Browns next starter on his old roster with Alex Smith.

Dorsey and the Chiefs originally acquired Smith in March of 2013 from San Francisco for two second-round picks. Considering the Chiefs have no first round pick thanks to the trade that allowed them to draft Patrick Mahomes, the asking price for a consistent, 33-year-old quarterback could be fairly similar.

Cleveland owns six picks in the first three rounds, including two first-round picks expected to be within the top-five. Smith won’t garner a first round pick, but could one of the Browns three second round picks get the deal done?

The pick would likely be their late second-round pick acquired from Philadelphia in the Carson Wentz deal, which will likely be around the 60th overall pick depending on how far the Eagles go in the playoffs.

Kansas City is also without their fifth and seventh-round draft picks after trading for Cameron Erving and Kenneth Acker. They could potentially add a pick based on the conditions structured in the Marcus Cooper trade with Arizona, but those terms are unknown.

The Chiefs believe they have their quarterback of the future after drafting Patrick Mahomes in the first round last year. Mahomes will start week 17 against Denver in what will be a critical game in not just the Chiefs season, but their franchise history.

As for Cleveland, Smith could enter as a one-year starter helping to develop the weapons on offense, mentor DeShone Kizer, and stabilize the team. Smith could absolutely win games in Cleveland and set the franchise forward towards success.

With Smith in place, Cleveland can use their two projected top-five picks on their secondary and weapons on offense. Players such as Minkah Fitzpatrick, Saquon Barkley, Quenton Nelson, and Bradley Chubb would make a world of difference for the Browns organization.

If the Chiefs can claim a second-round pick for Smith it’ll be a win-win for them and the Browns. Kansas City can allow their franchise to move forward behind Mahomes and acquire a high draft pick in return while the Browns can focus their draft efforts on building a team, not throwing darts at quarterbacks.
