NFL modifies week 17 schedule to eliminate Sunday Night Football
NFL fans should change their calendars after the league eliminates the final Sunday Night Football game of the regular season
NFL Senior Vice President of Broadcasting Howard Katz announced a series of major scheduling changes for the final week of the regular season.
The Cincinnati-Baltimore, Buffalo-Miami and Jacksonville-Tennessee games have all moved from 1:00 PM ET to 4:25 PM ET and remain on CBS.
The Carolina-Atlanta and New Orleans-Tampa Bay games will both move from 1:00 PM ET to 4:25 PM ET and remain on FOX.
This year the NFL decided to eliminate Sunday Night Football on New Years Eve because of playoff implications likely being decided already.
Here’s the week 17 schedule in its entirety.
Green Bay at Detroit | 1:00 PM | FOX |
Houston at Indianapolis | 1:00 PM | CBS |
Chicago at Minnesota | 1:00 PM | FOX |
New York Jets at New England | 1:00 PM | CBS |
Washington at New York Giants | 1:00 PM | FOX |
Dallas at Philadelphia | 1:00 PM | FOX |
Cleveland at Pittsburgh | 1:00 PM | CBS |
Carolina at Atlanta | 4:25 PM | FOX |
Cincinnati at Baltimore | 4:25 PM | CBS |
Kansas City at Denver | 4:25 PM | CBS |
Oakland at Los Angeles Chargers | 4:25 PM | CBS |
San Francisco at Los Angeles Rams | 4:25 PM | FOX |
Buffalo at Miami | 4:25 PM | CBS |
Arizona at Seattle | 4:25 PM | FOX |
New Orleans at Tampa Bay | 4:25 PM | FOX |
Jacksonville at Tennessee | 4:25 PM | CBS |
The modified schedule allows the NFC playoff picture to set simultaneously with only one spot remaining between the Seahawks and Falcons. The NFC South is still up for grabs, but the Panthers and Saints have already clinched playoff berths.
There’s a murkier picture in the AFC with four teams still competing for the two wild card spots. The Ravens, Titans, Chargers, and Bills will all play at 4:25 as well, creating an exciting afternoon of football.
Multiple teams will still be searching for home field advantage throughout the playoffs, although Philadelphia, Minnesota, and New England are tied with 12 wins entering the Eagles Monday Night Football game against Oakland Christmas Day.
