First Round (5th overall): Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma

In many ways, I think Baker Mayfield’s competitive nature will remind John Elway of himself.

Mayfield is not necessarily comparable to Elway as a prospect, as Elway was a generational talent and football equivalent of a ‘five tool’ player, but Mayfield — like Elway — has the ability to will his team to victory.

In the 2017 season, Mayfield has done a lot of imposing his will on teams, and Oklahoma is in position to win the college football playoff while Mayfield collects awards and accolades.

He’s already got the Heisman Trophy, but could he be among the top five picks in the 2018 NFL Draft? If I have it my way, he will.

There’s nothing about Mayfield’s game that I don’t like. He has a great arm, he has pocket awareness, and he makes accurate throws to every level of the field. He’s an exceptional athlete with the ability to create plays with his feet.

Like I said about Russell Wilson years ago, if Mayfield were a couple of inches taller, would there even be a discussion about his draft positioning?

To this point, his height hasn’t deterred him from being a great player. As a matter of fact, Mayfield has gotten better every single year he’s been in college.

He could be the type of playmaker at the quarterback position that quickly turns around the Broncos’ fortunes.
