The Cleveland Browns have fired general manager/vice president of football operations Sashi Brown. What comes next for the ailing franchise?

The Cleveland Browns are following in the footsteps of the New York Giants, getting a head start on offseason preparations by firing their general manager and vice president of football operations Sashi Brown, who has been with the team since just 2016.

Brown’s hiring was initially a surprising one, but the Browns tried to be creative and find someone who could rebuild their team, and Brown did so by accumulating draft capital and a ton of cap space.

Unlike the Giants, however, the Browns are sticking with Hue Jackson as their head coach for the moment, despite him having won only one game in two seasons.

Cleveland has long been searching for any sort of answer within the franchise, whether it’s the general manager position, the head coach position, the quarterback position, or what have you.

Brown’s departure from the Cleveland organization is just the latest in a long line of misses for this franchise, but if ever there was a time they would have to try pretty hard to make the wrong decision, this time is it.

The Browns will have a number of options to replace Brown as their general manager, including many recognizable and reputable names around the league.

Let’s explore a few…

John Dorsey

Dorsey and the Kansas City Chiefs agreed to part ways before the start of the 2017 season. It was a somewhat shocking move considering how well Dorsey had done in the draft.

Dorsey’s ability to evaluate talent could be exactly what this Browns front office needs, but with a bevy of options in front of him, will he actually take on the responsibility of rebuilding the Browns, or use them as leverage?

Scot McCloughan

McCloughan is widely regarded as one of the best talent evaluators out there, but the Redskins fired him due to an apparent struggle with alcoholism. Obviously, whatever is going on with McCloughan outside of football will need to be clear before any team — especially the Browns — decides to hire him, but his track record is as good as any.

McCloughan has had great success with every franchise he’s been with, including his short time with the Redskins.

Jerry Reese

Despite being fired recently by the New York Giants, Jerry Reese has been a respectable general manager in the NFL for some time. He’s won multiple championships and put together rosters that have been among the toughest to beat in January.

He could be a consideration for Cleveland as well.

Trent Baalke

The former San Francisco 49ers general manager is another very good talent evaluator, but the combination of he, Jed York, and Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco didn’t end as well as it started.

After missing badly on the hires of Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly as head coaches for the Niners, Baalke was fired.

Peyton Manning

Of course, this name will be talked about because of Manning’s connections to Jimmy Haslam, but Manning doesn’t have any experience, unlike the guys listed above.

Manning would certainly bring the star factor to the Browns’ front office, but the 2013 version of Peyton Manning the quarterback wouldn’t be coming to Cleveland. This would be a massive change of pace for the five-time MVP.

Louis Riddick

Riddick was apparently set to become the GM of the San Francisco 49ers when they were considering hiring Josh McDaniels as their next head coach, but obviously that never happened.

He has previously worked in the front offices of Philadelphia and Washington prior to his current gig of evaluating talent for television.
