Roster Cuts

Projected cap space before cuts:  $40.57 million

  • Mike Glennon – $11.5 million saved
  • Markus Wheaton – $5 million saved
  • Marcus Cooper – $4.5 million saved
  • Quintin Demps – $3.66 million saved
  • Jerrell Freeman – $3.5 million saved

Projected cap space after cuts:  $68.74 million

The Bears already have lots of cap space to work with but the odds are with a new coaching staff coming in that some players will be getting dismissed in order to create more. Glennon and Wheaton are the two most obvious choices. Both turned out to be colossal busts as signings this year. One kept turning the football over and the other couldn’t stay on the field due to constant health problems. Cooper seemed to start off the year strong but has regressed with each week since.

It’s possible to make an argument that Demps and Freeman are worth keeping around but that’s unlikely at this point. Both are pushing deeper into their 30s, both suffered significant injuries this season and both were supplanted by two younger players who have performed well in their absence. Given how Pace tends to avoid keeping older players, this feels likely.
