It’s time for Giants fans to face reality and be honest with themselves

Removing a player or coach can be an emotional decision for a franchise and especially for a fanbase. In the case of Eli Manning, the fans see a player they grew up with who won multiple Super Bowls and provided 14 years worth of memories.

But Giants fans have to face a harsh reality that separates the fan and the business people in the industry. Their team is 2-9, have been eliminated from the playoffs, and have the third-worst record in the entire league. It’s unusual for Giants fans to see their season end in November, but it’s a harsh reality they must understand. It’s over.

Manning is not being benched in the typical sense of the term. The organization told him they wanted to see Webb and Smith and offered for Manning to start but give way to the younger players. Like the gentleman he is, Manning recognized where the organization and his career are heading and knew the best thing was to allow them to move forward.

With five games remaining on their schedule the Giants have to look forward and understand where they are. They drafted a quarterback in the third round last year and have a player who was a second-round pick only a couple years ago. There are preconceived notions with Geno Smith and Davis Webb, but the Giants can’t leave any potential untapped.

It’s a waste of time to continue playing Manning at this point. New York must find out what they have with Smith and Webb, and simply not because they have nothing to lose. What’s the point of winning games if you are the Giants? It only drives them out of contention for a top-three pick and the opportunity to find a quarterback of the future.

For all we know Smith turned a corner in his career and will bring something new to the table. It’s unlikely, but stranger things have happened. Webb obviously showed the Giants som

ething during the draft process, or else they wouldn’t have wasted a third round pick on him.

If Webb or Smith does show something the Giants won’t have to sping the quarterback carousel in the draft. They can get a dynamic player like Saquon Barkley or find a franchise left tackle knowing they at least have potential with Webb.

Now is a time for not just reflection, but looking forward for members of the Giants organization. Several members of the organization are likely headed out this offseason, including head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese.
