San Francisco 49ers fans got a little too eager to see Jimmy Garoppolo as they cheered following an injury to C.J. Beathard…

We knew going into the 2017 season that the San Francisco 49ers were going to take quite a bit of time to be competitive. Their first win of the season game in their 10th game, and they promptly followed it up with a loss this past weekend.

Among the reasons why they are losing games? Not just their quarterback play, but the protection of the quarterback as well.

Rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard took over the starting job that was previously held by Brian Hoyer, and has been hit a lot since taking that position.

On one particular hit this past weekend, Beathard got hurt, and 49ers fans responded by cheering before he had even stood up. Fellow Niners players weren’t too happy about their fans’ response to Beathard getting hurt…

In this case, the cheering by 49ers fans may have just been a little premature in terms of its timing. Like Staley says in that audio clip above, the fans likely didn’t have any malicious intent with their cheers, but it was certainly poorly timed.

Why were 49ers fans cheering, you ask?

Well, a few weeks ago they made a trade deadline deal to get Jimmy Garoppolo, and up until yesterday, they had yet to see him in action on the field.

Garoppolo came over from the New England Patriots for a second round draft pick and appears to be the 49ers’ long-term plan at the position. That would certainly make sense given what they invested.

Garoppolo came in and threw his first touchdown pass as a Niner, generating even more excitement for his future from Niners fans.

This fan base is certainly not the first to get excited about a quarterback coming into the game. Bears fans were certainly not opposed to the idea of Mitchell Trubisky replacing Mike Glennon as soon as possible this year.

The issue with this is simply the timing, and I think 49ers players conveyed that very well here. It’s not right to cheer when a player is injured, unless you’re cheering that he’s okay.

Next: Two-round NFL mock draft

This is simply a case of poorly timed excitement, and what the 49ers do at the quarterback position from this point on will be fascinating to watch, even as they are in the midst of a season where they will most certainly not be competing for anything other than draft status.
