Duane Brown to Seahawks

Grade for Seahawks: B

Of all the trades being made at the deadline, this one seems to be the most interesting to me.

Why?

Because the Texans got back the best haul of any trade that has yet been made. The Seahawks have made a couple of deals for veteran players that have involved second round draft picks, so they won’t have any in the next two draft picks without trading down or whatever.

That being said, the price that was paid was probably necessary, as Seattle’s offensive line has been a dumpster fire for a couple of years now.

Here are my hesitations…

Duane Brown held out in Houston because of a contract issue. Seattle has the lowest cap space in the NFL. That doesn’t mean they can’t eventually free up some room and re-up Brown, but if he just comes in and plays his best right away, it would be a bit of a head scratcher.

Why would it be a head scratcher?

Well, before playing on Sunday against Seattle, Brown had held out the entire year. Then he came out and made statements against the team’s owner, even though Bob McNair’s comments were out of line.

Brown doesn’t seem to be a good teammate when evaluating from afar, but I could be wrong.

Grade for Texans: A

I like this trade for the Texans, even though it means giving up your left tackle. Houston played decent without Brown for the first half of their season, and now has gotten some really nice return on a player they might have had to get rid of one way or another.

Jeremy Lane is a player that can help their secondary. He has been a part-time player for the Seahawks, who felt good about their depth at that position, but he could be a nice help for Houston playing 65-75 percent of the defensive snaps.

The 2018 fifth round pick is a nice asset to have, even if it is near the bottom of the round, and the Texans won’t see the last of this trade until 2019, when they have an additional second round draft choice now.

Like I said, I think the Texans did well to get rid of a player that didn’t want to be there, that was causing problems, and get a good return for him.
