Seattle Seahawks acquire Duane Brown from Houston
Duane Brown is on his way back to Seattle after playing there yesterday
Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider has made multiple attempts to acquire a veteran offensive tackle at recent trade deadlines. He’s finally hit on one, acquiring Duane Brown from the Houston Texans.
Cornerback Jeremy Lane, a fifth-round pick in 2018, and a second-round pick in 2019 is the official compensation for Brown.
Rumors of Brown being on the move arose prior to the Texans playing Seattle on Sunday from both NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter. News of Brown’s trade first came from Schefter Monday night prior to Monday Night Football.
A three-time Pro Bowler, Brown had recently returned from a season-long holdout with Houston. The 32-year-old has played just one game in 2017, coincidentally against his new teammates in Seattle.
Houston originally drafted Brown with the 26th-overall pick in 2008 from Virginia Tech. He signed a six-year $53.4 million contract and has one year remaining on the deal. Brown’s final year stands to pay him $9.75 million, but he carries no dead cap space, allowing the Seahawks to move on after the 2017 season.
Seattle has allowed 16 sacks this season, the seventh-best in the NFL. Despite drafting Rees Odhiambo, Germain Ifedi, and Ethan Pocic in the top three rounds over the last two drafts the Seahawks continued to struggle in their run blocking and pass protection.
Former top pick Luke Joeckel was signed in the offseason but has been hurt and underperformed. Career-back-up Matt Tobin was also brought in from Philadelphia.
