Jacksonville’s defense just got A LOT better with Marcell Dareus reuniting

With only a couple of days until the typically snooze-worthy NFL trade deadline the Buffalo Bills unloaded a major piece of their defense. Marcell Dareus will be moving from Buffalo to Jacksonville, as first reported by Adam Schefter Friday night.

Jacksonville will send a conditional sixth-round pick that can improve to a fifth-rounder back for the two-time Pro Bowler. The cheap price for a dominant interior defender is likely explained with Dareus’ hefty paycheck.

The Jaguars won’t be able to completely free themselves of Dareus’ contract until after next season when he’s due $10.2 million. He’ll have three more years with a much smaller dead cap should the Jaguars want to move on.

Adding Dareus to the interior of their defensive line, Jacksonville now has arguably the best front seven in football. They project to start emerging star Yannick Ngakoue, Dareus, Calais Campbell, and Malik Jackson on their defensive line with former first-round pick Dante Fowler Jr. and third-round pick Dawuane Smoot coming off the bench.

At linebacker, the Jaguars have recently-extended Telvin Smith, veteran Paul Posluszny, and Myles Jack. Smith’s extension will pay him over $40 million for four additional seasons.

For Buffalo, the unloading of talent for draft picks continues after moving Ronald Darby, Cardale Jones, and Sammy Watkins in the summer. Buffalo owns the Kansas City Chiefs’ first-round pick after Kansas City moved up for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. They own the Rams second and Eagles third-round picks from the aforementioned transactions.
