A Carson Palmer injury looks to have ended the Cardinals season prematurely

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer will have a lot to think about on the plane ride back from London Sunday night.

The 37-year-old quarterback suffered a broken left arm in a 33-0 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Head coach Bruce Arians expects the broken non-throwing arm to keep Palmer out for approximately eight weeks.

With the Cardinals going on their bye week off the loss in London Palmer’s projected return would be for week 15. At that point, it may not matter for Arizona.

As tough as it is to say, Palmer’s injury came at the perfect time for Arizona with the bye week. They’ll evaluate Drew Stanton, who went 5/14 replacing Palmer, and likely add someone in the coming days. Blaine Gabbert now moves into the backup role behind Stanton.

Free agents available include Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin III, Matt McGloin, and former Cardinal Matt Barkley.

There likely won’t be any trade candidates worth exploring for the Cardinals, who just made a move to add running back Adrian Peterson from New Orleans. Backup quarterbacks are as valuable as any position in the NFL, and become incredibly pricey when a desperate team such as Arizona comes calling.

If the team sticks with Stanton fans can expect to see a lot from their running backs. Despite not having star David Johnson the Cardinals have made a concerted effort to utilize their running backs, especially since acquiring Peterson.

Palmer had reportedly considered retirement after suffering multiple injuries in recent years. Arizona brought him back with the idea this could be his last year, but failed once again to draft a quarterback. Kansas City hoped them in the 2017 NFL Draft to take Patrick Mahomes II from Texas Tech in the first round.

After the bye week Arizona will travel to San Francisco, followed by five games against projectable playoff teams with Seattle, Houston, Jacksonville, LA Rams, and Tennessee Titans.
