Chicago Bears: Building the Next Coaching Staff
By Erik Lambert
Defensive Coordinator: Chuck Pagano
Some might be wondering why a current head coach is listed here as a defensive coordinator. The simplest reason is that rumors remain strong that Chuck Pagano will likely lose his job at the end of 2017 with the Indianapolis Colts. He’s under the proper conditions for that to happen. The Colts hired a new GM in Chris Ballard who may have his own ideas for a head coach. Then there’s the fact that Andrew Luck is injured and not due back for some time.
This translates to losing and there’s no doubt Ballard will cut him loose if that happens. So why should the Bears have interest? Though his head coaching tenure has fallen on hard times, Pagano is still a highly respected defensive mind. Despite numerous personnel issues the Colts fielded the 9th ranked scoring defense in 2013 and the 11th total defense in 2014. His lone year as a defensive coordinator came in 2011 with the Baltimore Ravens. They finished 3rd that season. After he left? They dropped to 26th. Last but not least, his background is in a 3-4 system.
