Chicago Bears: Building the Next Coaching Staff
By Erik Lambert
The Chicago Bears coaching staff is in trouble. None more so than the head man himself John Fox, who appears to be losing his grip more and more.
At age 62 it really does look like the game has become too much for him. Fox rode the coattails of two Super Bowl trips for a long time but those days are long gone. He’s 10-26 thus far in Chicago, and some fans would say he’s a far worse 1-4 against the Green Bay Packers. That’s a far more unforgivable mark in that city. Part of the reason Lovie Smith lasted so long was he’d embraced the value of beating Green Bay from the outset.
Now the buzz is growing that Fox is running out of time. His team is 1-3 and likely out of hope for making the playoffs. If they can’t at least put together a decent record then the odds are he’s getting fired this coming January. Thus the question will shift to who replaces him?
This article is an exploration of a possible staff the Bears could put together in 2018. One that should be able to help this team get where it wants to go.
Head coach: Dave Toub

This will come as a shock to a lot of people. Most undoubtedly will have their sights set on the top offensive coordinators available around the NFL. For obvious reasons of course. Mitch Trubisky is the future of this franchise and they need somebody in charge who will know how to cultivate him properly. Top offensive minds are typically the men for that job like Mike McCarthy in Green Bay or now Sean McVay over in Los Angeles.
The thing is hiring an offensive mind for the sake of getting an offensive mind landed this franchise Marc Trestman. It’s not a guarantee. What they need is a coach who understands how to put his players in the best position to succeed. Somebody with a consistent track record of success who understands player psychology and isn’t afraid of taking risks.
Better still they need somebody who understands the city of Chicago and its fans. Something both Trestman and Fox have refused to embrace. No man fits these requirements better than Dave Toub. He’s the best special teams coordinator in professional football and was the mastermind behind the Devin Hester juggernaut between 2006 and 2012.
He spent nine years with the Bears. He knows the ownership and the fan base well. His experience includes learning under men like Andy Reid and Lovie Smith. That gives him a nice blend of offensive and defensive philosophies. Throw in his special teams mastery and this feels like a potential head coach who is ready for his shot.
It’s worth noting the last special teams coach the Bears hired for the top job was Mike Ditka.
