New England has traded a quarterback to the Indianapolis Colts

Former NC State quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been traded by the New England Patriots to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for wide receiver Phillip Dorsett. ESPN’s Field Yates was the first with the news.

Indianapolis is without star quarterback Andrew Luck, who is out with a shoulder injury to start the season.

Dorsett was Indianapolis’ first round pick in 2015, but has failed to produce early in his young career. In 26 games the lighting-fast Dorsett has only 753 receiving yards with three touchdowns.

New England adds Dorsett after losing slot receiver Julian Edelman to an ACL tear suffered in the preseason. If anyone can pull his first round talent out it’ll be head coach Bill Belichick.

Brissett saw playing time last season with Tom Brady’s suspension for DeflateGate and after Jimmy Garoppolo was injured. The 91st overall pick in 2016 started two games and threw for 400 yards in three appearances with no passing touchdowns. He also ran for 83 yards and a touchdown in three games before suffering a hand injury.

Playing for both Florida and NC State Brissett threw for over 5,700 yards with 46 touchdowns to only 15 interceptions. His departure from New England leaves the reigning Super Bowl champions with just Brady and Garoppolo on their 53-man roster.

Brissett coming into Indianapolis is a worrisome sign for Colts fans hoping Luck could rebound from offseason shoulder surgery. Adding Brissett means competition for backup Scott Tolzein, who is projected to start the season under center.

It’s a whirlwind trade executed with just hours left in the NFL roster cut deadline, where teams must go from 90 players to 53 by 4 p.m.
