Another first round pick of the Cleveland Browns can be deemed a bust

Kansas City has acquired offensive lineman Cameron Erving from the Cleveland Browns for a fifth-round draft pick. Cleveland selected Erving with the 19th-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Florida State, their second first round pick of that draft.

Erving has been a major disappointment in Cleveland playing across the offensive line, and dealt with a calf injury in camp. Originally deemed the replacement to center Alex Mack, the former Seminole has never found his place in the NFL.

He’s played both guard positions, right tackle, and center during his first two years in Cleveland.

Erving’s trade was the second major move for the Browns front office Wednesday morning following the release of former Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden.

Kansas City will have at least two years of control over Erving with the ability to utilize a fifth-year option worth $9.4 million in 2019. Barring a spectacular turn of events that option will never be utilized.

How the Chiefs play Erving, once healthy, shall be interesting. He certainly provides depth to an offensive line mixed with youth and veterans. Indications are former Cowboy Bryan Witzmann will hold onto the left guard job and Mitch Morse was drafted in 2015 to be the franchise center.

Expect the Browns to continue their roster purge by addressing their backup quarterback position. Will they keep the $16 million price tag on Brock Osweiler or attempt to swap second-year arm Cody Kessler after naming DeShone Kizer their starter?
