Bears lose promising wide receiver Cameron Meredith to knee injury
Another major knee injury has ravished playing time from Cameron Meredith
Chicago Bears wide receiver Cameron Meredith suffered a devastating left knee injury so gruesome Fox wouldn’t show a replay on television.
Playing in the all-important third preseason game Meredith went down against the Tennessee Titans after taking two separate hits. Linebacker Avery Williamson hit the Bears receiver high as safety Jonathan Cyprien went low, forcing Meredith’s knee to bend.
It was as gruesome an injury as you will see in professional sports, and it leaves the Bears and first round quarterback Mitchell Trubisky without their top young pass catcher.
An undrafted free agent out of Illinois State in 2015 Meredith flourished in his second season with the Bears, catching four touchdowns with nearly 900 yards receiving. With Alshon Jeffrey departing for Philadelphia in free agency Meredith and first round pick Kevin White were due to start in Chicago this year.
Meredith’s devastating injury leaves the Bears with veterans Kendall Wright, Markus Wheaton and Victor Cruz vying for a starting job alongside the former Mountaineer White.
Chicago will likely have to look into the trade or free agent market with Meredith’s injury appearing to be season-ending. Jacksonville’s Allen Hurns is a trade candidate approaching roster cuts, and other veterans could find themselves out the door as rosters go from 90 men to 53 next week.
Next: Bears should consider FA Kony Ealy
The Bears finish the preseason next week against the Browns before hosting the reigning NFC champion Atlanta Falcons for week one of the regular season on September 10.
