Carson Wentz throws TDs to Torrey Smith, Alshon Jeffery
Philadelphia Eagles second year quarterback Carson Wentz is getting his new targets involved in the team’s dress rehearsal with some nice TD throws…
Carson Wentz has plenty of new weapons at his disposal this year, but the two players expected to make the most significant impact for the Eagles are obviously wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith.
Jeffery has been a no. 1 receiver for the Chicago Bears the past couple of seasons, while Smith has sort of been that 1A or no. 2 type of receiver on a couple of teams, most notably the Baltimore Ravens where he had his lone 1,000 yard season (2013).
So far in the Eagles’ preseason dress rehearsal against the Miami Dolphins, Wentz has hit both of the newcomers for touchdowns.
First, the touchdown to Torrey Smith. A 50-yard bomb:
This is good pocket presence by Wentz, who steps up with pressure closing in from his right and left, and fires a strike on a great read to Smith.
The coverage by Miami looks like it was busted. The cornerback running step-for-step with Smith initially peels off, to cover no one else in particular. The safety help was simply not ready for Smith to keep running all the way to the end zone, and Smith makes him pay.
The second touchdown pass (of the first quarter, mind you), is another nice read by Wentz.
This is a good show of patience by Wentz, whose initial read has to be the screen to Nelson Agholor. The Dolphins clearly thought the same thing, and left Jeffery over the top on a slant route relatively wide open.
This is still a tough play because Wentz has to get the ball over the top of the defense.
Jeffery does the rest.
Eagles fans will love this first quarter from Wentz and the offense, and the coaching staff for Philadelphia obviously liked it a lot as well. They pulled Wentz from the game after one quarter of play and got Matt McGloin on the field.
