Kaepernick is easily the most polarizing player in the NFL despite not being on a team

Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned with two preseason games remaining until the Baltimore Ravens travel to Cincinnati for their opening game. His protests of the National Anthem as a member of the San Francisco 49ers have captivated the league on and off the sidelines, thus leaving him without a job.

Few teams still require a veteran quarterback as the 2017 season approaches, leaving little opportunity for the former NFC champion to latch on. Quarterback competitions in Jacksonville and Cleveland has some drawing conclusions, but the two markets that have shown the most interest in the 29-year-old are Seattle and Baltimore.

Having little depth behind Russell Wilson, the Seahawks appeared to be an early fit for their former nemesis from California. Baltimore, however, is potentially searching for a starter with Joe Flacco battling a back injury.

Both head coach John Harbaugh, brother of Kaepernick’s coach Jim in San Francisco, and general manager Ozzie Newsome have spoken publically regarding their interest in the quarterback. Ryan Mallett and Josh Woodrum currently handle the passing in Baltimore, but each have little to no success at the NFL level.

Kaepernick is the obvious candidate for a team needing a quality backup with a personal connection to the coach, but something has held the team back from pulling the trigger.

The thing holding Baltimore back could potentially be evaporating this afternoon, opening the door for the veteran Kaepernick.

The Ravens took a day off from practice to visit the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetary on Monday. Because of Kaepernick’s protest of the anthem prior to kickoff,  it’s conceivable to think the team held off on signing Kaepernick until after the events early this week.

It’s far from unprecedented to bring a veteran quarterback into training camp with the possibility of starting week one. Miami did it last week bringing Jay Cutler out of the broadcast booth following Ryan Tannehill’s knee injury.

It’s a theory, not far-fetched based on the public relations issues that come with Kaepernick, many have pointed towards.

Now that the trip to the hallowed grounds of Arlington has passed, it’s more likely than not the Ravens reopen talks with Kaepernick to be their backup quarterback, and potentially start the opening weekend of the season.
